Hyundai Harnesses MSMEs to Propel Hydrogen Future in Tamil Nadu
A Vision Towards Clean Energy
In a bold stride towards a sustainable future, Hyundai Motors is set to revolutionize the hydrogen landscape in Tamil Nadu with the active involvement of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). In concert with IIT Madras and bolstered by state government support, Hyundai is spearheading efforts to establish a comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure, positioning Tamil Nadu on the forefront of the clean energy frontier.
Collaborative Synergies with IIT-Madras
The Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre at IIT-Madras’ Thaiyur campus stands as a beacon of innovation, driving projects from hydrogen production to application. Emphasizing localization, the Centre is eager to collaborate with MSMEs, particularly in crafting electrolyzers, hydrogen microgrids, and refueling stations. These efforts, as Prof. V Kamakoti of IIT-M elucidates, aim to transition technologies from nascent stages to commercial maturity, leveraging the state’s expansive industrial capability.
Empowering MSMEs with Precision
At the heart of this initiative is a robust plan to utilize the precision manufacturing expertise of small industries in Chennai, Hosur, and beyond. By employing local talent and expertise already thriving in the automobile, aerospace, and defense sectors, the Centre accelerates the journey towards viable hydrogen solutions. As Dr. Aravind Kumar Chandiran, project principal investigator, remarks, MSMEs are pivotal in coating technologies and machining intricate gas channels essential for the hydrogen supply chain.
Aiding Local Talent and Startups
Providing a vibrant platform, Hyundai commits 100 crores INR to ensure accessibility for startups, incubators, and industries. Girish Ramakrishnan of TANSAM Centre underscores the initiative’s potential, highlighting its promise to nurture MSMEs with skills, testing prowess, and production line guidance, thus enabling agile responses to the burgeoning hydrogen and electric vehicle markets.
The Path Ahead
While hydrogen technology in India is yet to reach commercial scales, strategic collaborations such as these herald a future of energy security and innovation. This initiative reflects a symbiosis of global expertise and local talent, paving the way for an ecosystem where MSMEs thrive in the emerging green hydrogen landscape. As stated in Times of India, Hyundai’s commitment to this sustainable transition is unwavering, marking a new chapter in Tamil Nadu’s industrial capability and environmental stewardship.
