Uniting Forces for Economic Change: How Community Organizations Are Leading the Way

In a rapidly shifting political arena where community organizations face expanding challenges but also unprecedented opportunities, the Community Economic Mobilization Initiative (CEMI) stands as a beacon of hope. This initiative, formed by a collaboration of dedicated partners including the Institute for Social Transformation at UC Santa Cruz, is empowering local organizations to not only navigate the complex terrain of economic development but to lead it.

A New Dawn for Community Empowerment

On Oct. 20-21, the city of Davis, Calif., hosted a transformative event that gathered over 150 participants from various community organizations across the state. The Institute for Social Transformation took center stage, driving discussions on how these groups can harness opportunities for equitable economic growth, even amidst political uncertainties.

Chris Benner, a prominent figure at the Institute, emphasized, “We help our partners understand their biggest challenges and become leaders who build our collective futures, grounded in the visions, priorities, perspectives, knowledge, and capacities of the communities they work in.”

CEMI: Catalyst for Economic Resilience

Launched in 2022 with $22 million in funding, CEMI has evolved into a comprehensive network that bridges gaps between nonprofit and public sectors. The initiative aims to democratize economic development processes, fueling solutions tailored to the nuances of individual communities.

The current landscape has shifted, with significant investments in marginalized communities being withdrawn. This makes CEMI’s role even more critical as it continues to foster resource-sharing and strategic planning among its partners, which now include over 50 nonprofit and public organizations.

Erika Katske, a pivotal member of the Institute, noted, “Even though we’re in this difficult political moment, our partners now understand more about the tables they should be sitting at, and that is a big step forward.”

Building Capacity Through Technical Assistance

CEMI’s Technical Assistance Team, developed in collaboration with esteemed entities like the Equity Research Institute at USC, equips community organizations with crucial training and tools. The goal is to enhance these organizations’ capacity to effectively participate in economic development efforts and advocate for just allocation of public funds.

One remarkable success story is Imperial Valley Equity and Justice (IVEJ), which, with CEMI’s support, transformed from a small project into a thriving nonprofit championing inclusive economic goals across several cities.

Azucena Beltran, a project manager, reflected on the importance of these efforts: “We’ve been able to forge many non-traditional partnerships…in the process of building an authentic relationship with these community organizations.”

Gathering that Sparks Change

The impactful October assembly was not just about strategizing; it was a testament to solidarity and resilience. Participants engaged in scenario planning, peer learning, and open dialogues with funding bodies, crucial steps toward fortifying these partnerships.

Chris Benner remarked, “We have to recognize that the traditional strategies might not be appropriate for this moment.”

Erika Katske captured the essence of the gathering, noting the palpable energy and renewed hope it brought to attendees. “There’s always magic that happens when organizations from all over the state come together. It was truly an infusion of hope.”

As stated in UC Santa Cruz - News, the transformative power of initiatives like CEMI lies in their ability to unify purpose and strengthen the resolve of those most dedicated to positive economic change.
