Journey to Venus: South Korea's Innovative CubeSat Project
The field of space exploration is set to experience a groundbreaking addition with South Korea’s Institute of Basic Science (IBS) launching the Chasing the Long-term Variability of Our Nearest Neighbor Planet Venus (CLOVE) project. This pioneering initiative aims to observe Venus using CubeSats, small satellites designed to analyze the atmospheric conditions of the planet.
A 15-Year Odyssey
The IBS has outlined an ambitious 15-year mission, with plans to release a new satellite every three years. This strategic timeline is intended to encompass at least one complete solar activity cycle, lasting approximately 11 years. These cycles are crucial, as they govern the fluctuations in solar activity, impacting the planets within our solar system.
Building and Launching the CubeSats
In collaboration with Konsberg NanoAvionics, a leading small satellite manufacturer, IBS will build the first CubeSat, known as CLOVESat-1. NanoAvionics is tasked with its integration, environmental testing, and initial operation. According to News9live, the primary objective is to delve into the enigmatic atmospheric phenomena of Venus, including examining cloud cover altitudes and unexplored absorbers.
Complementing Global Space Efforts
As part of an international endeavor, the CLOVE project aligns with future missions from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and India. Each of these missions, including NASA’s DaVinci and Veritas, ESA’s EnVision, and India’s Shukrayaan, will work in tandem to enhance our understanding of Venus, contributing comprehensive data.
