US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced the impending resignation of his deputy, Victoria Nuland.

"Victoria Nuland has let me know that she intends to step down in the coming weeks as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs," Blinken's statement reads.

Blinken noted that he and President Joe Biden have asked Under Secretary for Management John Bass to serve as Acting Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs until Nuland's replacement is confirmed.

Bass has worked in the State Department for many years, serving as US ambassador to Afghanistan (from 2017 to 2020), Turkey (2014 to 2017) and Georgia (from 2009 to 2012).

Blinken thanked Nuland for her work at the US State Department.
