A Proud Chapman Alumna

Nicole Saito’s journey from Chapman University to Northwestern University is nothing short of inspiring. As a triple major in Political Science, History, and Economics, Nicole’s academic tenacity has led her to work alongside the distinguished Nobel laureate, Dr. Joel Mokyr. Her impressive academic credentials include not only her Chapman experience but also her current pursuit of a PhD focusing on economic history and political economy.

Embracing Economic History

Saito’s decision to pursue her PhD at Northwestern University is grounded in their prestigious economic history program. With Joel Mokyr as one of her advisors, the department’s excitement doubled when Dr. Mokyr received the prestigious Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. As Saito reflects, “On the morning of the announcement for the Nobel Prize in economics, the entire department was thrilled.”

Impact Across Generations

Dr. Mokyr’s influence extends well beyond Northwestern’s walls; his academic “great-grand-advisees” span the globe. Nicole notes, “Joel calls them his great-grand-advisees, emphasizing the generational impact his guidance has had in academia.”

A Personal Connection to History

Nicole’s dissertation focuses on the economic impacts of the Japanese American internment during WWII, a topic she passionately explores not only academically but personally as a Japanese American. Her insights are enriched by her personal history and education under Dr. Stephanie Takaragawa at Chapman, who guided her exploration of this subject with a critical lens on Asian American history.

Bridging Personal and Academic

“It’s the personal connection to history and the academic rigor from my education that drives my work,” Saito shares. Her journey exemplifies the blend of personal experience and scholarly pursuit—continuing to challenge concepts of race and assimilation, aided by Dr. Mokyr’s encouragement to think beyond traditional boundaries.

A Legacy of Guidance

Nicole expresses deep gratitude for the lessons and mentorship received at Chapman and Northwestern. Her growth under the tutelage of distinguished scholars from both institutions illustrates how academic support can shape future leaders.
