In a groundbreaking endeavor, Texas A&M Health Center of Excellence in Forensic Nursing has transformed the way forensic nursing is practiced by launching a mobile forensic simulation unit at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). This innovative approach to training is setting new benchmarks in forensic medical care and training at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
A New Era in Forensic Training
The mobile unit aims to serve as a dynamic learning environment for nurses looking to specialize in forensic nursing. Four dedicated nurses from BAMC have embarked on a rigorous 12-week online program followed by hands-on training within this state-of-the-art unit. This breakthrough training includes performing pelvic exams and forensic assessments on both male and female simulated patients, paving the way for these nurses to become certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE).
Bridging Knowledge and Practice
Jennifer Lopez, BAMC’s forensic healthcare program manager, emphasized the significance of this training. “This program not only equips nurses with necessary forensic examination competencies but is also a stepping stone towards Adult/Adolescent SANE certification through the Attorney General of Texas,” she highlighted. Danielle Norman, a dedicated registered nurse, reflected on the experience as invaluable, stating, “This training enhances our ability to perform trauma-informed exams and provides real-time insights from seasoned coaches and live models. It is a learning journey that prepares us for unforeseen challenges.”
Empowering Patients Through Compassionate Care
Emily Brunkenhoefer, another passionate nurse involved in the training, elaborated on the transformational impact this unit has on patient care: “Every case we encounter adds to our growing repository of knowledge, enabling us to better serve and connect with the patients.” Norman further shared that the most rewarding aspect of forensic nursing is the opportunity to empathize and reassure patients post-trauma, fostering a healing environment where they are heard and supported.
A Commitment to Excellence
BAMC currently boasts four nurses with Department of Defense Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examiner training and CA-SANE recognition. This initiative not only highlights the commitment of Texas A&M and BAMC to elevate healthcare standards but also their determination to bring holistic, informed care to survivors of violence and trauma.
“Victims of violence deserve care and resources,” Brunkenhoefer declared. “Our work bridges the gap between healthcare and the needs of these individuals. It’s not just about changing systems but transforming lives, one patient at a time.”
As reflected in their dedication, Texas A&M Health and BAMC are leading the path with their innovative initiatives, striving for a future where comprehensive and sensitive care is accessible to all.
